Low Carb Chipotle Order

It depends what your budget is, and beans are the right place to spend it.

Low carb and keto are not the same instruction, and at Chipotle the difference decides whether you keep the beans. A low carb Chipotle order usually has 40–60 g to work with rather than under 20, which changes the answer: black beans cost 22 g but return 7 g of fiber, a net 15 g. Rice costs 40 g and returns 1 g. One of those is worth paying for.

Where to spend the carbs

Ranked by what you get back per gram of carbohydrate.

  • Beans first — 22 g carbohydrate, 7 g fiber and 8 g protein
  • Fajita vegetables — 5 g for 20 calories of volume
  • Light rice if you want a grain base — 20 g rather than 40 g
  • Cauliflower rice if you do not — 5 g

Where the carbs go without returning anything

These add carbohydrate without fiber or protein to justify it.

  • The flour tortilla — 50 g, the largest single carb item on the menu
  • A full scoop of white rice at 40 g for 1 g of fiber
  • Roasted chili-corn salsa at 16 g when the other three salsas are 4 g
  • Chipotle-honey vinaigrette at 18 g, 12 g of it sugar

Questions about eating low carb at Chipotle

How is low carb different from keto at Chipotle?

Low carb and keto part company at Chipotle over the beans. Keto drops rice and beans together; low carb usually keeps beans, because 22 g of carbohydrate returns 7 g of fiber and 8 g of protein. Rice returns 1 g of fiber for 40 g of carbohydrate, the worse trade of the two. The keto guide covers the stricter build.

Should I get light rice or no rice?

It depends on the carb budget. Light rice costs 20 g of carbohydrate against a full scoop's 40 g, and keeps the volume a rice base gives a bowl. No rice saves the full 40 g and leaves the container short, unless fajita vegetables replace it for 20 calories.
